about

Nine songs written during quarantine, drawn from Neill’s religiously-kept notebooks where personal reflections sit next to professional notes. Songs written on guitar from notes-to-self about family and self-care, from journal entries building a personal narrative, and from work notes taken during online critique as an art teacher, in conversation with peers and students about their relationships to their own artwork and practice.

Neill started emailing demos of these songs to his old hometown friend Ben in November of 2020 and Ben started sending back overdubs of drums and percussion. In July of 2021 Ben came down from Raleigh, North Carolina, to join Neill in Carrollton, Georgia, at Neill and Casey McGuire’s house. Over a weekend in what before the pandemic had been the dining room, they finished writing arrangements and recorded live takes of drums and guitar or bass for all but one song. Over the next ten months, while returning to teaching in person, Neill overdubbed vocals and other instruments and mixed and edited, while Ben came down to Carrollton twice more to record a final song, do percussion overdubs and mix. They finished the album in May of 2022, and Carl Saff mastered it in June.
